A former actor who is accused of sexually assaulting young indigenous girls has been detained by Las Vegas police, according to police records.
Nathan Chasing Horse, also known as Nathan Lee Chasing His Horse, is thought to be the head of a cult called The Circle.
At least six alleged victims from the early 2000s have been named by police.
He hasn't yet been assigned a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
The police raided his home on Tuesday after a months-long investigation that started after they got a tip-off in October, according to The Associated Press. He is said to live there with five wives.
Chasing Horse had developed a reputation as a medicine man who led spiritual gatherings and healing rites among native tribes in the US and Canada.
According to police records, the abuse is believed to have taken place in several states, including Montana, South Dakota, and Nevada, where Nathan Chasing Horse has lived for about ten years. He is suspected of using his position as a healer to commit the abuse.
It has been claimed that some of his alleged victims were as young as 13. One of his wives allegedly was given to him as a "gift" at the age of 15, while another allegedly married him at the age of 16.
He is also charged with recording sexual assaults and setting up sex between the victims and other men for whom he allegedly received payment.
Chasing Horse, according to the police, was expelled from a reservation in Montana in 2015 due to accusations of human trafficking.
He achieved his greatest fame as an actor for his portrayal of the young Sioux tribe member Smiles a Lot in the critically acclaimed Dances With Wolves (1990) directed by Kevin Costner.
